What I really love about a home office, is that decor-wise it's really up for grabs. Unlike a traditional office space, I don't have to ensure I'm following a set of boring corporate standards. And unlike the rest of our home, I don't have to confer with anyone else on what I want to hang or paint. It's a free for all.
I like my home office to feel like the inside of my brain. Essentially, I want it full of things I love and that inspire me. So it has this lovely eclectic, collected, whimsical feel. I work better in my home creative space than I do anywhere else.
And while space on my walls is slowly filling up, I had a little corner that I wanted to try something out in.
A Little Star Silhouette Constellation Gallery
It’s so happy and whimsical, that I’m obsessed and now want to replicate it somewhere else!
I have a love affair with magazines, and in so many decor magazines there are gorgeous photos of people’s framed silhouette collections over staircases or through hallways. While each individual silhouette is really a work of art, there’s something about a collection of them that visually grabs you. It’s that compromise between repetition and individuality.
Most framed silhouettes are of people. Silhouettes have an incredible artistic tradition that dates back centuries with a big popularity that flared in the 1800s. Prior to photography, a hand cut silhouette was a great way to create a memento of a loved one. Painted portraits were a great option, but often expensive and definitely time-consuming.
While there is so much beauty in those hand cut portraits, I didn’t particularly want a gallery of profiles watching me. Instead, I wanted something that felt really magical. And that’s how I ended up with stars.
When they’re grouped together they have a really cheerful, whimsical constellation feel. It’s the perfect corner piece!
How I Made My Star Silhouette Constellation
This is the easiest home decor DIY ever maybe. Truly, it could’t be easier. First, shop for a selection of oval (or mostly oval) frames. I went with all gold-toned and in a variety of sizes. Most of these were purchased at Home Goods for about $4-7 dollars. Quick Tip: A collection of anything usually looks best with an odd number.
Second, swap out the factory photo for a piece of cream cardstock. Cream, not white.
Third, hand cut out stars. My first attempt was to try and make a different style star in each frame. But then, when I put it all together it looked like total chaos. Too many styles in too many different types of frames. I needed a little more repetition. So I opted for 8-pointed stars. Since I was hand-cutting them, they’re all a little unique.
Another note: I did have to trim off the bottoms of the stand at the back. Since I was hanging them, I didn’t need the stand anyway. But, just a note that you might need to do that!
